From the Logic of English website:

The Logic of English: Foundations teaches children ages 4 to 7 years old to read real books without guessing or memorizing sight words. Students develop phonemic awareness, learn to read and write the 74 basic phonograms, and increase reading fluency through structured but playful activities. The innovative Rhythm of Handwriting method is built into the Foundations curriculum aiding students in developing fluid handwriting. Step-by-step students grow in reading comprehension skills beginning with phrases, advancing to sentences, then paragraphs, and culminating in reading well-known children’s books. Inspired by evidence-based reading research, Foundations combines multi-sensory learning with the latest in linguistic research thereby providing students the best possible foundation for education: strong reading and writing skills.

Level A: Students begin reading phrases using lowercase and short vowels.

Level B: Students read 1-syllable sentences and are introduced to long vowel and schwa sounds.

Level C: Students read multi-syllable words within controlled paragraphs.

Level D: Students master phonograms and spelling rules needed to read 98% of English words.

Each level is taught through 40 lessons; 8 review lessons; and 6-8 student readers. In addition, families will need to purchase the following books, which are used throughout each of the levels.

  • Basic Phonogram Flashcards
  • Rhythm of Handwriting Cards
  • Doodling Dragons: An ABC of Sounds
  • Phonogram Game Cards
  • LOE Student Whiteboard
  • Rhythm of Handwriting Quick Reference

My daughter was already reading when I discovered Logic of English but I decided to try it for spelling. It’s easy to teach and includes spelling, vocabulary and grammar. None of our homeschool friends have heard about it, yet, but I think it’s great. I’ll be using it with my younger son to teach him to read.
